Observations of the Local Group of Galaxies

CARINA DWARF

Andrew Murrell observing from Australia using a 20" ƒ/5.

I have sighted this galaxy only once. It appears as a very large 15' by 8' hazy patch just brighter than the sky background. I was able to locate the exact field using a prinjt taken from the ESO B plate. I started observing at 100 magnification. A 10th magnitude star lies just south of the galaxies centre. A line of 3, 13th magnitude stars mark the middle of the galaxy. Changing the magnification up to 160 i noticed that the galaxy was slightly easier to see. It still required averted vision but I felt more confident in having observed the galaxy. I also noticed that the galaxy had a grainy appearence at this magnification. Other than the galaxies oval shape no other detail was seen. The surface brightness appeared to be even. There are many field stars superimposed over the galaxy.
